Jadestone, now in its second generation, is the product of over 30 years of experience in the study, acquisition and sale of Fine ChineseAntiques and Works of Art as well as Antique Natural History Prints. Through our advertisements in Arts of Asia, Orientations, Decor and other international publications, we have developed an international client base. It is our goal to establish long term relationships with our clients and we go to great efforts to gain their trust and to ensure their satisfaction.

You can collect with confidence from Jadestone Gallery. We understand that collecting Chinese art has more than it’s fair share of risks and that many collectors are weary of purchasing in light of the countless number of reproductions on the market. Everyone, even the most noteworthy of experts make mistakes. We believe that any such mistakes should be at the cost of the art dealer, not the collector. That is why we maintain long standing guarantees of authenticity and satisfaction (at bottom of page). As Collectors of Art, we believe that purchasing art should be enjoyable and as stress free as possible. As scholars in the field of Chinese Art, we believe that its appreciation comes through knowledge, understanding and respect. That is why we are constantly working to further our own studies through continued research and make it our goal to share our knowledge with our clients, fellow collectors or those new to the subject of Chinese Art.

Due to the size limitations of a web page it is impossible to represent all of the pieces in our collection. Please take a moment to view the small sampling of items provided on our Chinese Antiques and Antique Print web pages. For a larger selection of items in any category, please contact us via e-mail, phone or facsimile. We sincerely hope that you find the quality and selection of our collection as well as our unique approach to long distance transactions to be beyond your expectations.

John M. Schiess

John began collecting Chinese Art in the 1960’s with his wife Tonne. Over the years he spent countless hours studying the artifacts associated with the various periods throughout Chinese history. His primary area of research was in Chinese jade, however he was also interested in ceramics, glass, snuff bottles, enamels and lacquer ware. While collecting Chinese art he became frustrated with the lack of information dealers were willing or able to share with him. He found that many dealers knew little or nothing at all about the subject from an art historical perspective. Jadestone Gallery was founded in 1988 with the goal of educating collectors in addition to simply selling them antiques and art. His expertise was sought by collectors and museums worldwide and has been influential in the creation of many of the worlds finest Chinese art collections.

Memorial to John M. Schiess by Donald Jenkins, Curator Emeritus Asian Art of the Portland Art Museum as published in Orientations Magazine, June 2004 (jmstribute.pdf).

Erick R. Schiess

Erick, the eldest son of founders John and Tonne, grew up around the family collections and began working with the Gallery in 1988. He furthered his studies in Asian Art at the University of Oregon under distinguished professors Charles Lachman and Esther Jacobsen. After graduating with honors from the Art History department he began working full time with his father at the gallery. Upon the passing of John in 2003, Erick took over as the director of Chinese Art for Jadestone and now serves as a dealer, consultant and appraiser to numerous museums and collectors worldwide.

Over the last two decades, Erick's travels have taken him all over the world to view and purchase fine Chinese Art. His primary areas of research are in Jade, Ceramics and Works of Art from Post-Archaic China (Song Dynasty onward), although he has spent a great deal of time working with the art and artifacts from earlier periods. As a collector, Erick is fond of Snuff Bottles as they allow him to explore miniature examples of the various materials he deals in.

Erick is pleased to continue his father's legacy and is truly grateful to have been given him as a mentor. Many other experts have generously shared their knowledge with Erick over the years, but it was his friendship with the late Dr. William Corbin that was perhaps the most influential. It is Erick's sincere hope that he is able to share the knowledge and passion for Chinese Art passed to him by these wonderful people.

Guarantee of Authenticity

Jadestone Gallery guarantees the authenticity of each and every item for which we make a claim as to age or origin. In the unlikely event that we should ever make an error in our attribution of any such item, Jadestone Gallery will refund the total purchase price as our sole liability to the original purchaser during the first year following the date of purchase. Following the first year the item may only be returned for credit against additional purchases. Any challenge to our attribution under this Guarantee must be made by an expert in the field and we will not unreasonably object to such evidence so long as it is provided by an individual who is generally recognized as credible within the field of Chinese Antiques and Works of Art. We will not accept the opinion of anyone not specifically accepted as an authority in the field such as a dealer or appraiser of general antiques, an interior designer or anyone else who does not have our credentials or experience.

Satisfaction Guarantee

At Jadestone Gallery we understand that it is not always possible for our clients to be certain that the item they purchase will be exactly correct for a specific purpose. This is particularly true for our mail order clients who make their selection based only upon a photograph, as photographs do not always give the same impression as viewing the item first hand. It is for that reason that Jadestone Gallery allows all of our clients a ten day period in which to live with their purchase to be certain that the correct choice was made. During that ten day period, any item purchased may be returned in the same condition as when purchased for a full refund or for credit against a different item from our inventory. This guarantee is only valid to the original purchaser from Jadestone and does not extend to any item that is resold within that ten-day period or any item that has sustained damage subsequent to leaving our premises. It is our intention that every client is totally satisfied with their purchase from Jadestone Gallery and we work with our clients to be certain that such is the case.
